Communication strategy: say the right thing, and say it loud

Thibaut Abadie Garcia, directeur artistique et stratège en communication freelance

Many brands communicate. Few communicate with intent.
The difference between the two is a clear communication strategy,
a framework that defines what to say, to whom, how and on which channels.

Without this framework, you pile up actions with no consistency, spend energy with no direction and struggle to build a lasting relationship with your audience. With a well-built communication strategy, everything you say has meaning and contributes to a precise goal.

As a freelance art director and communication strategist,
I help you lay these foundations and build communication that reflects who you are and works.

The 4 pillars of an effective communication strategy

A solid communication strategy rests on four interdependent elements.
Together, they create a consistent, actionable system.

1. POSITIONING

Your positioning is the place you occupy in your audience’s mind.
It answers the question: why you and not someone else?
Defining a clear positioning is the first step and often the hardest.
It is also the one that shapes everything else.

2. KEY MESSAGES

Based on your positioning, we define your key messages:
the core ideas you want to convey, whatever the format or channel.
These messages act as a compass for everything you say.
Your communication stays consistent even when it takes different forms.

3. CHANNELS AND FORMATS

Not every channel is relevant to every brand.
Rather than wearing yourself out trying to be everywhere, we identify the channels
where your audience really is and the formats that suit you.
An electronic music label, for example, does not have the same
priorities as a fine-dining restaurant.

4. THE ACTION PLAN

A strategy without execution is just a document. That is why I turn each recommendation into concrete, prioritised and scheduled actions. You know exactly what to do, in what order and with what goals.

Why work with a freelance communication strategist?

Communication strategy is often what young organisations lack most.
They launch, they post, they hope.
Without a clear course, scattered efforts rarely produce lasting results.

Working with a freelance communication strategist means:

Gaining clarity. You know exactly what you want to say, to whom and why. That clarity shows immediately in every piece of content you produce.

Saving time. A well-defined strategy avoids back-and-forth, mid-course changes and pointless production. It also makes working with other suppliers much easier.

Increasing impact. Consistent messages, repeated on the right channels, stay in people’s minds. That is how lasting brands are built.

Seeing the bigger picture. When you are caught up in day-to-day operations, it is hard to step back. An outside eye can identify what is holding you back, what works and what is still missing.

Who is it for?

MUSIC LABELS AND INDEPENDENT ARTISTS

In the independent music industry, communication is often an afterthought.
Yet it is what creates a lasting connection with your audience. I work specifically with labels and artists who want to build a strong brand identity, beyond simple releases.

RESTAURANTS AND FOOD BUSINESSES

A restaurant is an experience, but that experience still has to be told well. Together, we define how to showcase your cuisine, your atmosphere and your story, consistently across all your touchpoints.

SMES AND INDEPENDENTS

Whether you are a craftsperson, a consultant or the head of a growing SME, a clear communication strategy helps you stand out in your market, especially when your competitors are still communicating haphazardly.

My approach: strategy and art direction combined

What sets my work apart is the combination of communication strategy and art direction. Most communication consultants deliver recommendations without thinking about how they will look. Art directors, for their part, create beautiful visuals with no strategic grounding.

My approach brings the two together. Your communication strategy translates directly into consistent visual choices, from editorial tone to graphic identity and content formats.

In practice, the work unfolds in three stages:

Diagnosis. We start by analysing your current situation: who you are, what you say today, who you are talking to and how you are positioned against your competitors.

Strategy. On this basis, we build your strategy together: positioning, key messages, priority channels and editorial line. Everything is documented in a clear, usable deliverable.

Activation. Finally, we take action. I support you with implementation, content creation and the art direction of your materials, or simply back up your in-house team.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a communication strategy assignment take?

It depends on the depth of support you want. A diagnosis and strategy usually take 3 to 6 weeks. If you want to include activation and content creation, the assignment can extend to 2 to 4 months.
Either way, we define the scope and schedule together before starting.

No. Although music labels and independent artists make up a large share of my clients, I also work with restaurants, SMEs and independents in a variety of sectors. What matters is your need for clarity and consistency in your communication.

Communication strategy defines what to say, to whom and why. Community management is the day-to-day execution on social media. One is incomplete without the other, but strategy always comes first: it guides all the operational decisions that follow.

Yes. At the end of the strategy phase, you receive a complete deliverable: formal positioning, key messages, channel recommendations, editorial line and a prioritised action plan. The document is designed to be used on your own or shared with other suppliers.

Yes, depending on the assignment. I can provide art direction for your visual content: social media, print materials and campaign visual identity. We define everything together in advance. I can also handle copywriting and scheduling as needed.

Both are possible. Some clients need a one-off strategy workshop: half a day to define their positioning and messages. Others prefer ongoing support over several months. I adapt to your situation and your budget.
